Strike action by Teacher unions will be contained – GES

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has assured that government will guarantee instructing and studying activities in pre-tertiary establishments will resume regardless of the strike action by three trainer unions.

On Friday, three trainer unions, the Ghana National Association of Teachers, National Graduate Teachers and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers declared an indefinite nationwide strike to register their displeasure over the appointment of the brand new Director-General of the Ghana Education Service.

The Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations is currently holding its second assembly with the trainer unions to carry finality to the strike action.

The first assembly with the unions was held last Friday however couldn’t be concluded.

Speaking to JoyNews on the sidelines of the assembly, the Spokesperson of the GES, Yaw Opoku Mensah expressed optimism by the government to finish the strike action by the shut of the week.

“We expect that today, probably I am hopeful that finality will be brought to this. There will be a closure on the matter by both parties. We do not expect the strike to drag for long, tomorrow or today we could see a positive response because I am confident with the kind of engagement that has gone on so far and both parties are committed to the cause,” he said.

He appealed to academics to resume instructing activities in numerous schools as negotiations with the trainer unions proceed.

“Once leadership has decided to engage government on this issue, I think we need to go back and do our normal duties as teachers while we keep a close eye on all the interactions and eventually see what the future holds for us,” he acknowledged.
