Oxford Street building evacuated as fire breaks out near John Lewis

orkers have been evacuated from an Oxford Street building and roads closed as a fire broke out on Monday night.

London Fire Brigade suggested folks to keep away from the area whereas flames are dampened.

The blaze is believed to have began within the basement of a building web site near to John Lewis’s flagship division retailer.

BBC journalist Chi Chi Izundu posted on Twitter “lots of smoke” might be seen at 4pm.

She wrote in a Twitter post: “Outside the old department store next to John Lewis behind Oxford Street. Loads of workmen evacuated and lots of smoke.”

Photos shared on-line present emergency services at the scene.

LFB tweeted: “Firefighters are dealing with a fire in the basement of a construction site on Oxford Street. Please avoid the area if possible.”
