Gunmen abduct dozens in Nigeria’s Zamfara state

At least 130 individuals have been kidnapped by gunmen in Nigeria’s north-western state of Zamfara, a neighborhood official has told the BBC.

Gunmen on bikes raided two areas taking ladies, children and the aged, Ibrahim Dosara, the state’s information commissioner, said.

Security forces have been deployed to rescue the victims.

Zamfara is amongst a number of Nigerian states grappling with kidnapping for ransom.

The kidnapping occurred over the weekend in Zurmi and Kauran-Namoda areas, Mr Dosara said.

The gunmen had been utilizing the victims as ”human shields” due to the continuing ”heavy bombardments” of their hideouts, he added.

Some experiences say the individuals kidnapped are farm staff who had been busy in the course of the harvesting season.

In some areas of the north-west area, gangs have reportedly imposed levies on farmers as a situation of permitting them to harvest their crops unhindered.

Efforts by the Nigerian government to finish insecurity in the area have principally failed. Families of kidnap victims have usually ignored the official recommendation and paid ransom as demanded.

Insecurity is among the key campaign issues forward of Nigeria’s general elections in February subsequent year when a successor to President Muhammadu Buhari will be chosen.
